A military aircraft from the Italian Air Force’s aerobatics squadron crashed into a car, leading to the tragic death of a 5-year-old child near Turin in northern Italy.
The family was driving along the airport perimeter when the plane collided, caught fire and damaged the airfield fence. The girl’s mother and older brother were hospitalized with burns, the father has already been discharged.
An Italian Air Force investigation is looking into the possibility that the plane may have collided with birds before the crash. The pilot, Major Oscar Del Do, managed to eject by parachute moments before impact, but suffered burns.
The aircraft was part of the Frecce Tricolori squadron.
The Frecce Tricolori squadron, a renowned group of aerobatic pilots, was preparing for an airshow to mark the 100th anniversary of the Italian Air Force. In 1988, a tragic crash involving three Frecce Tricolori aircraft resulted in loss of life at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
