Have you ever thought in a very busy day of everyday life, among car horns, queues, city hustle and bustle, to find refuge in a place where you can disconnect from this city chaos in contact with nature? A place full of colors, scents and sounds that relax and invigorate the senses?
Know that this place exists, it is in the heart of the capital of Santa Catarina, and this month it celebrates seven years of existence and biodiversity: it is the Botanical Garden of Florianopolis, which celebrates another anniversary on the 24th of the following day.
Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development of Florianopolis, Fabio Braga, emphasizes the importance of space for the city. “The Florianopolis Botanical Garden plays a very important role in the city. We can highlight biodiversity conservation as there are about 500 species of botanical species living here, including many rare and endangered species,” he says.
World of colors and fragrances
In addition to botanical species, the garden has seedling nurseries, an agro-ecological garden, medicinal mandalas and theme gardens, bringing together a rich biodiversity, including rare and endangered species, carefully preserved.
The site covers not only flora, but also local history and culture. The Azores Forest pays homage to the “walnut trees of India”, which have deep roots in the backyards of the Azores. The green labyrinth with a diameter of 30 meters is an exciting challenge for all ages and a place for contemplation in the center. Meliponarium is home to local ruthless bees that play a vital role in plant pollination.
The reserve is home to a collection of endangered Brazilian trees and promotes agroforestry, a sustainable farming model that promotes biodiversity conservation and environmental health.
environmental education
The Botanical Garden also offers a range of educational activities aimed at environmental education for all ages. For children, there are fairy tales, themed workshops and special programs that awaken interest in nature. In addition, schools, institutions and organized groups can plan educational visits, providing students with a rewarding and interesting experience. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the local flora and be inspired by the beauty and complexity of plants, composting and recycling methods.
“This is important because it raises everyone’s awareness of sustainable development. Students become agents of multiplication and disseminate this knowledge at home and in their cycle of coexistence. Today, the garden is a space for tourism, recreation and leisure, where many families spend outdoor activities such as walks, picnics and nature watching!
The Botanical Garden of Florianopolis, located on the Admar Gonzaga highway, in the Itacorubi area, was opened on September 24, 2016 and covers a vast area of 19 hectares. The creation of the space was made possible by the efforts of community leaders, Florianopolis City Council, Alesca (State Legislative Assembly), Santa Catarina State Government, related institutions (Epagri and Fapesque), UFSC, Sapiens Parque, City Hall Municipality.
