The ex-boyfriend who killed 24-year-old Vanessa de Souza Borba with a cut to her neck in Florianopolis was sentenced on Tuesday (age 21) to more than 16 years in prison. The crime took place in October 2020 in the Rio Vermelho area, shortly after the breakup.

As it turned out during the investigation, the 23-year-old then-boyfriend had already shown jealousy and harassment towards the victim. However, Vanessa did not file a police report against him.

According to the investigation, the two were in a relationship for approximately one month and were separated for approximately 30 days.

The crime happened on October 3, 2020. The next day, the body of the victim was discovered by family members who unsuccessfully tried to contact him by phone. The woman was dead, her blouse was in her mouth, and her face and neck had been cut off.

Vanessa was born in Lajes, in the Serra di Santa Catarina, and a few months ago she moved to the capital, where she worked. The father also lived in Florianopolis, but in a different area, said police chief Gustavo Kremer, then head of the DPCAMI (Delegation for the Protection of Children, Adolescents, Women and the Elderly of Florianopolis).

The accused was arrested in Xarqueadas, a city in Rio Grande do Sul, where he fled after committing the crime.

At trial, Justice Attorney André Otavio Vieira de Mello argued that the murder was qualified as having been done for a clumsy reason, using violent means, and because it was a femicide committed in the context of domestic violence against women.

The jury supported the representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and awarded the defendant three qualifiers. The total sentence reached 16 years and four months in prison with an initial closed regime. In preventive detention, since he has been detained, he will not have the right to appeal at liberty.

“Brazil is considered one of the countries with the highest number of femicides. Now, in a pandemic due to the new coronavirus and a number of other motives of social intolerance, the escalation of serious serious crimes is even more alarming, ”the prosecutor supports the guilty verdict.

“The decision of the Moscow jury, voting for a guilty verdict and hiding the qualification of femicide, as well as the vile motivation of cruelty, teach us a very important lesson: love and violence are incompatible,” he concluded.
