This year, more than 140,000 boys and girls took part in the ISDIN School Photo Protection Campaign, which has already taken place 28 times. “This year we have had a resounding success with the School Campaign, which we run in partnership with pharmacists and dermatologists, as we have been able to bring the importance of photoprotection to a much larger number of students than in previous years,” said Christian Garcia, Photoprotection Product Manager at ISDIN.

In particular, 146,100 students and more than 220 teachers were trained, and 1,261 schools from different countries participated. As for the staff who delivered these trainings, they are more than 500 pharmacists, 185 nurses, 21 dermatologists and 13 ISDIN employees.

The purpose of this veteran campaign is to teach the kids in the home the importance of sun protection and how they should do it the right way. As Dr. Georgina Logusso, Medical Marketing Manager at ISDIN notes, “It is very important to develop good habits at this stage, because that is when we are more receptive to acquiring good habits. So we have to focus on the little ones to try and reinforce these habits.” And remember that melanoma, “the most serious skin cancer, is partly due to sunburns we got as children.”

Children have more fragile skin than adults and are very vulnerable to ultraviolet rays, as they are more sensitive and permeable, so their ability to cope with solar radiation is lower. “Today, about 39% of children get sunburn in the summer, and these sunburns are one of the biggest risk factors for melanoma,” explains Dr. Logusso.

“Therefore, prevention should not start in adulthood, but from childhood,” he added, because adopting good protective habits from a young age will help them prevent the negative effects of solar radiation, such as burns, premature photoaging, or even skin. cancer.

Over 28 years of active campaigning, more than 6 million boys and girls from more than 10,000 participating schools have participated. More than 6,000 healthcare professionals, most of whom are pharmacists, have taken part in the training, and in 2022, medical personnel were included in the multidisciplinary medical team. For these professionals, initiatives such as ISDIN are helping the general population pay more attention to the health of their skin and sun protection in particular.

Upon completion of the ISDIN School of Photoprotection Campaign, which consists of FOUR steps, the center receives accreditation “School of Photoprotection”.

The first step is teacher training: short video capsules, after which teachers must fill out an online questionnaire to demonstrate the knowledge gained.

The second phase is “Student Training” which offers didactic material on skin protection and sun protection adapted for students aged 5 to 11 years.

These training sessions can be completed with a visit to a health worker who offers conversations with children as well as parents and teachers. In addition, educational materials are also offered to facilitate the training provided by the healthcare professional.

The fourth step is the School Sun Protection Program, which consists of a training manual that provides centers with the guidance and guidance they need to implement a sun protection policy that is integrated into their health education programs.
