How about cycling 18 kilometers a day to and from work? Unthinkable for you? Because it was the choice of Patricia da Cruz Abes, teacher and director of the Neim Caetana Marcelina Dias school, located in Ribeirão da Ilha, in the southern region of Florianópolis. Patricia, who lives in Campeche, finds cycling the perfect way to get around the city.

She says she leaves the house around 6:50 and parks her bike outside the school around 7:20 to start her work day. “When I arrive at the unit, I have time to change and start calmly,” says Patricia, who cycles about 90 km a week.

The teacher sees sports as a source of family integration

The teacher was born in Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, and says that sport has always been a part of her life. As a teenager, he ran the 800 and 1500 meters.

She is currently married to Laurent Abes, a physical education specialist and tennis instructor. She started playing sports under the influence of her husband about 18 years ago. Today, the entire family, which includes 12-year-old Sophie and 7-year-old Gael, are racket fans.

During the pandemic, Patricia was introduced to beach tennis. Alone or paired with her husband, she has already performed in Liga RB Adrenalina, Liga BT dos Amigos, Liga Sul da Ilha, Miami Beach, Inter Arenas and BT Tour Floripa.

Sophie, the eldest, became champion in the women’s under 14 category and placed second in the pairs category with her mother in the mixed category of the second leg of the BT Tour Floripa, a championship held in Praia da Joaquina, in the eastern part of the island.

Patricia notes that, in addition to improving health, sports play an important role in family socialization. “Our social life is hectic, there are many events on the weekends, which expands the circle of communication between adults and children,” he explains.
