The amputee’s limbs were delivered to family members in a cardboard box. This happened in the city of Paraiso do Tocantins, about 75 km from Palmas (TO). Information taken from the UOL portal.
Mason Deonir Teixeira da Paixao, 46, was involved in a motorcycle accident and both of his legs were amputated. He was treated at the Paraiso do Tocantins Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
According to Jornal Anhanguera, the family members consulted at the hospital whether they want the Deonir members to be taken home or thrown into the hospital waste. The family was taken aback by this suggestion, but chose to take the members home.
Two of the mason’s legs were delivered with a detailed message: “Right lower limb without foot and left lower limb with foot. Note: Part of the right leg is also missing.”
In a video circulating on social media, family members in distress captured the moment after receiving the box. “They put Uncle Deonir’s legs on, they delivered him directly to his son, they didn’t take him to the funeral home, for nothing. The regional hospital in Paraiso hand-delivered it to us in this box and said that if we don’t take it, they will throw it in the trash, ”says the niece, whose identity was not disclosed.
“They took advantage of the fragility of their son, brother, because we just went through a very serious situation, right? It’s very embarrassing.”
Also, according to UOL, a man appears in the background of the video stating that even the funeral home doesn’t know what to do with the mason’s amputated limbs.
“The funeral home also claims that, given the fact that this is not the correct procedure, they do not want to remove members. They claim he should be in the morgue. We don’t know what to do,” the boy says.
In an interview with the TV channel, family members said they were very shocked by the whole situation. They also said that some people even suggested that the members of Deonir be buried in the backyard of the house.
Deonir was taken to Palmas General Hospital in critical condition and the funeral home is now awaiting documentation for the burial of the amputated limbs in the same crypt where the stonemason’s father is buried.
“Communication Failure”
SES-TO (State Department of Health of Tocantins) in an interview with UOL said that it regrets the current situation, and called a serious mistake “a breakdown in communication between the team on duty” and “members of the patient’s family.”
“SES-TO emphasizes that all public hospitals are following standard protocol as part of the National Health Surveillance Agency Regulations No. 306 (2004) and the National Environment Council No. 358 (2005) regarding ensuring the cessation of healthcare waste . services,” the statement said.
The Secretariat also stated that in the event of an amputation, the hospital team should give the family the choice of “taking the family members in or leaving them with the health service.”
“When a hospital is responsible for the disposal of members, it is through a specialized company hired to perform the aforementioned services, which does not handle the materials as normal waste,” the note says.
In the case of patient Deonir, the secretary stated that the team “didn’t know how to explain the procedure to the family” and that family members “signed a term of responsibility, which is even reported in the patient’s medical record.”
