30 years ago, there was no geriatric residence in Greater Florianopolis that was treated with special attention. It was then that a family of doctors opened the doors of their own home to transform it into a long-term care facility for the elderly (ILPI), which is now a benchmark in the region.

This year 2022, Santa Ynez Geriatric Residence is celebrating the 30th anniversary of many achievements. Three decades of learning from LSIE best practices have taken new steps and made transformations in search of healthcare solutions for the institutionalized.

Often the family of an institutionalized person does not believe that he has left to live. But surprises happen when he gets attention from our professionals. “There are times when older people regain physical and cognitive abilities, moving from complete dependence to independence in basic daily activities. This is very encouraging, and we have examples of this,” says the geriatrician.

As an example, the specialist cites patients who eat again after the joint work of a nutritionist and a speech therapist. “The pleasure of being able to put food in your mouth with a cutlery is indescribable for both the patient and the professionals,” says the doctor. Margaret.

Another example of a pleasant situation that the doctor gives is when the patient enters the institution and begins to restore his movements, he walks again, thanks to the work of the entire multidisciplinary team.

The residential complex also offers more sophisticated treatments for guests in acute or chronic situations, such as oxygen therapy and intravenous medication, avoiding hospitalization. “We avoid the hospitalization of our guests as much as possible, as we have already seen that the personalized attention of our entire team significantly improves the survival of our most vulnerable patients,” says the doctor.

Lots of study and dedication

“We have become a benchmark because we study a lot, we strive to get to know the patient in all aspects of his health,” the doctor comments. “We were always very encouraged to study; devotion to research in biology was the most important thing in our family. Therefore, today we are an institution that manages to bring together several leading specialists to develop their work here. Always with the presence and inspiration of our mother, Maria Ines Curcio Simas (Don Zika), who is also a guest,” says the doctor. Margaret.

“For the entire team, this is a reason to rejoice that we have reached three decades of history knowing that what we do on a daily basis serves the well-being of people; that we are in the world to leave something good, bringing well-being, health, happiness and a more human and joyful life to our patients,” he comments.

Structure and innovation over 30 years of history

A lot has changed at the Santa Ynez Geriatric Residence in 30 years. Who will tell a little about the innovations of this special year is the geriatrician, Dr. S. Ricardo de Simas. “In 2022, we are working with a new system, specific software for long-term care facilities for the elderly (ILPI), which will help the team in various services,” which will enable interdisciplinary work at the highest level, he says.

Another innovation is the hiring of an occupational therapist to complement the team. Currently, the facility has professionals in art therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nutrition, senior staff and psychology who make up a team that, under the command of a team of nurses, can provide excellent service to guests. Not to mention, of course, specialized doctors who work in residency, two geriatricians, a cardiologist, a gynecologist and a dermatologist.

Expansion of the structure is also being studied to increase the number of beds by 50% (currently there are 51 beds) and modernize all facilities in common areas and rooms, including new security equipment.

Achievements don’t stop

According to the doctor. Ricardo de Simas, since 2010, about 300 guests have passed through Santa Ines. He also says that between 2008 and 2010, the Santa Ynes Geriatric Residence was renovated and expanded from a built-up area of ​​350 m2 to 1800 m2, from 16 beds to 51 beds with the acquisition of new equipment for all conditions. . . .
