House of the Dragon: why didn’t Rhaenys say “Drakaris” in that scene from episode 9?
Understand the motivation of the character in the scene
Dragon House reached its ninth episode. Among several important events, the scene in which princess rayenice (Eva Best) escaped from King’s Landing on his dragon, Meleysdestroying a good part of the sept in which the coronation took place Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney). Eventually, the princess had a chance to attack Alicent’s family directly, but despite her dragon coming face to face with the Greens, she didn’t send it. horrible to finish everything there. What is causing this?
Writer and Executive Producer, Sara Hessdiscussed the issue with the director Claire Kilner. To a question in an interview Hollywood Reporter to why Rhaenys did not end the war immediately, Hess replied:
“I think she just can’t do it. This is not her war. The struggle is going on between these two sides, and it is, as it were, not in it. She doesn’t feel like she’s going to be the one to go and get it over with. But you are right. If she just incinerated everyone, it’s game over, Reynira wins, and we’re done. But the cost is huge. And I also think that at this moment she is looking into Alicent’s eyes, and Alicent is walking in front of her to protect her son. It’s from one mother to another. Rhaenys is angry, but in her previous scene with Alicent, she respected her despite disagreeing with her. So she won’t kill another woman like that.”
Kilner added:
“We talked about it with Eva Best, and in the previous scene, she felt like Alicent was seeing Rhaenys for the first time in a long time. At this point, they are mothers in this horrible world made by men, and she can’t do that.”
In the episode, the character’s inaction raised questions as to the reason for this, as she was arrested by the Greens and takes the stage, killing several audience members, part of the townsfolk who were taken to watch the coronation. When asked about Rhaenys, who killed several civilians, Hess answered only: “This is Game of Thrones – civilians don’t count!”.
It’s worth noting that the scene in question is an addition to the series that doesn’t appear in the books. AT Fire and blood, Work George R. R. Martin upon which the series is based, Reynis not in Porto Real when Viserys dies and the Greens don’t arrest him. She participates in the Council of Negroes, supporters of Rainier, after the death of the king.
