A “differentiated” incident attracted the attention of the residents of Itapema and Balneario Camboriu on the northern coast of Santa Catarina this Saturday morning (9). According to military police, two men, ages 25 and 27, stole a car and ended up in the river with it after being pursued by agents.

Let’s figure out how the car ended up in the river

It all started when a man called the military police around 5 a.m. in front of Havan in Itapema. The victim reported that the car was stolen near the bar and filed a statement with the police.

Police cleared the vehicle a short time later when they received information that the stolen vehicle, a red GM/Prisma, was driving along Avenida Marginal Leste, corner Rua 244, on the wrong side of the road.

The police immediately moved toward the suspects, who were located on Third Avenue. According to the military police, refusing to stop, the thieves continued driving at high speed along several city streets.

During the chase, the driver of the Prisma was heading north towards Balneario Camboriu when he entered Rua Dom Henrique and continued to the end of the highway. After reaching the end of the street, the suspects crossed the river near the Iate Clube Camboriú.

The suspect claims that playing GTA makes him a “good driver”

Trying to escape from security agents, the couple drove the car into the river. Since the tactic didn’t work, they needed police help to get out of the river. The Prime Minister also clarified that the men refused to lie down on the ground and it took “moderate force” to stop them.

Military police officials said the suspects were drunk, disobeyed orders and smoked during the chase. The Prisma driver told the Prime Minister that he plays GTA (Grand Theft Auto), a video game widely known for its involvement in car theft and violence, and that this is why he is “good at driving.”

A winch and diver from the fire department were called in to remove the GM/Prisma from the river. The couple was then taken to the IGP (Institute of General Examination) as the men suffered minor bruises.

The agents then took the suspects to the CPP (police control center) in Balneario Camboriu, leaving the matter in the hands of the state.

During the chase, two cars were hit and suffered minor damage, and several trucks were hit by the two boys.
