In May, the port of Itapoa, on the north coast of Santa Catarina, broke its historical record in one month. In May, 98,113 TEUs were handled, each TEU is equivalent to a 20-foot container. This is the second time in a year that the terminal has exceeded its historical mark, as there were 92,662 TEUs in March.
In May, there were 44,159 entries and exits of trucks, compared to 42,921 registered in March this year.
LCL (Less Container Load) handling was also the highest in four years. In May, 28 containers of LCL were processed, totaling 147 different operations.

Last year, the port began operating over 50,000 m² of its yard, with a total static capacity of up to 22,000 containers. The expansion project provides for an additional 150,000 m² of patio, for a total of 450,000 m² in the final phase. Investment of BRL 750 million.
The port has also invested in technology: it has purchased ten new RTGs (tire cranes) and will be the first operator of this hybrid remote-controlled equipment in all of South America. Investments amount to more than 120 million reais.
The terminal also purchased a new porteyner (a crane that moves containers from ship to land and vice versa) and a new scanner to speed up security checks. In 2022, several more pieces of equipment were purchased.
“We have a serious structural problem, especially with regard to the access channel to Babitonga Bay, as well as the duplication of the SC 416 and SC 417 motorways,” said Cassio Schreiner, President of Porto Itapoá.

From January to March 2023, the ports of Santa Catarina handled about 561,300 TEU, representing 21.4% of all national traffic, according to Antaq (National Water Transport Agency).
Porto Itapoa ranks 4th in Brazil in this comparison. Portos Itapoa and Porto de Navegantes increased compared to January to March 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year.
