Balneario Camboriu City Council President Nilsson Frederico Probst has criticized the safety of pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge over the Camboriu River on BR-101, which was opened this Thursday (9).

In the note, the adviser rejected the work of Arteris Litoral Sul, the concessionaire responsible for the work, and claims that the footpath and bike path were “extremely narrow”.

In addition, the Chairman of the Legislative Chamber recalled that the bridge, opened in 2021, does not allow two bicycles to pass at the same time, “bringing incidents and even accidents between cyclists and pedestrians.”

“It is unbelievable that Litoral Sul did not do this properly when designing the bike path and pedestrian crossing, which put the lives of its users at risk,” the adviser warns.

In contact with BUT+Arteris Litoral Sul said it was aware of the adviser’s dissatisfaction with the lack of an independent bike path, but work is progressing on a bicyclist-pedestrian sharing scheme.

“In doing so, we have opened up a new opportunity for cyclists and pedestrians (…) Today, the public can use the bridge and secondary road at 60 km/h for vehicles to make the crossing safer,” he notes.

Also, according to the concessionaire, the contract and project did not include a separate bike lane, and that the work offers adequate conditions for dividing space between cyclists and pedestrians. “This is nothing compared to what it was before, when you had to use the shoulder of the highway,” concludes Arteris Litoral Sul.

The completion of the bridge to the south took 17 months.

The bridge across the Camboriu River on the south side of the BR-101 motorway in Balneario Camboriu was opened this Thursday (9) after more than 17 months of work and an investment of 11.6 million reais.

The structure is 172.7 meters long and 10.4 meters wide and was built on six pillars, two at the head, with two spans of 26.5 meters and three more of 39.9 meters.

The new bridge has two traffic lanes and a common sidewalk for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge connects the promenade through the districts of Vila Real and Nova Esperanza. This is an alternative for those who live in the region and do not need to drive on the highway.

Construction under the responsibility of Arteris Litoral Sul, the concessionaire managing the motorway, included laying the foundations, constructing the supporting blocks, constructing and laying precast beams, concreting the deck, paving, and installing safety and signaling devices.

Launches of prefabricated beams were carried out using an automated shuttle farm, one of the work differentials. Thus, according to the company, there was no need to use cranes, and the impact on traffic was minimized.

The approximate population of the southern region today is 30,000 people, and many of them pass this section every day because they work in the city center.

As with the bridge on the northern section, the footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists has become extremely narrow. On the bridge, opened in 2021, the footbridge prevents two bicycles from passing at the same time, leading to incidents and even accidents between cyclists and pedestrians. Incredibly, Litoral Sul did not do this properly when designing the bike path and pedestrian crossing, putting the lives of its users at risk.

It should be noted that several meetings have been held between Concessionária ARTERIS – Litoral Sul and the advisors of this Legislative Chamber to discuss the needs of the population of the region. However, there have been no complaints so far.

Faced with these facts, the Chamber of Balneario Camboriu expresses its displeasure and concern at the thousands of people who travel daily on the bridges of the southern and northern sections.
