A meteor traveling at 40 times the speed of a commercial jet was spotted in the skies of Santa Catarina early this Thursday morning (7). The recording was made by amateur astronomer Josimar Justino in Monte Castelo, on the state’s northern plateau.
In addition to SC, this phenomenon was also recorded in São Paulo in images taken by Sergio Mazzi. According to Justino, who is part of Bramon, a Brazilian meteor monitoring network, the images taken in two states were needed to estimate the speed of the meteor, which reached 50 thousand kilometers per hour.
“Highlights the incredible speed with which these celestial bodies cross the sky,” comments Justino. Due to the speed, the phenomenon was visible for only 10 seconds, even though this was longer than the average duration of most recorded events.
