According to veterinarian Priscilla Louise Pohl, freezing fruits, vegetables and even small pieces of meat is a great option for dogs and cats. “In addition to being healthy, it preserves vitamins and minerals for pets and promotes hydration,” explains the specialist.

But when making “ice cream” some caution is required. “It is important to pay attention to quantity, always offer vegetables cooked and not use any seasonings,” warns Priscilla.

Not all food can be offered to four-legged friends, so it is important to be careful when choosing a menu. “Allowed foods include bananas, pears, melons, pumpkins, meat and spinach,” says the veterinarian.

Other foods are also allowed but should be offered in moderation, such as apples, strawberries, watermelon, pineapple, broccoli, potatoes and even bread.

There are also foods that should not be brought near animals. “Never feed foods containing onions, garlic, avocados, chocolate, grapes and raisins, nuts and tomatoes, and avoid spicy and very citrusy foods such as orange and lemon, almonds, popcorn and processed foods,” warns Priscilla .

In addition to taking care of the animals’ nutrition, the environment in which they are located must be appropriate. “It is extremely important to keep pets in a cool and ventilated area, with access to food and water, especially on days when we spend hours outside,” explains the specialist.

Take extra care when walking, especially on paved areas, which absorb more heat and raise temperatures.

“They can cause burns to pets’ paw pads,” Priscilla comments. “There is no protection on our paws, it’s like we’re walking barefoot.”

The best time for a “walk” with pets is before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. However, according to the veterinarian, since the heat is even worse at this time of year, it is recommended to go for a walk before 9 am and after 6 pm, when the sun sets and the ground becomes cooler.
