A deep sea fish has been found dead on a California beach in the US. The discovery was made by a rescue worker who notified local authorities.
The deep black devilfish has sharp teeth and the ability to hypnotize prey using an appendage on its head. Although it appeared in the cartoon Finding Nemo, it is rarely seen as it usually lives at depths of more than 1 km.
The creature was collected for analysis by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and then taken to the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History.
The deep-sea fish is known for having a “bulb” on its head.
Although the species is marked by a bioluminescent appendage at the tip of its head used to hunt other sea creatures, only the females have this characteristic. They are also approximately ten times larger than males.
Because of this, male fish have adapted to cling to their mates and act as parasites, feeding on the remains of prey in exchange for mating with it.
