The capybara, rescued at the end of February, did not resist and died early this Thursday morning (09) in Blumenau, in the valley of Itajai. The animal was rescued on the 21st after spending more than 20 hours waiting to be rescued. Godofrid, as she was called, was hospitalized and underwent surgery.

The capybara has been cared for by the Blumenau Wildlife Service (SAASBlu), which works in partnership with FURB, the Santa Catarina Environmental Institute, the Military Environmental Police and Blumenau City Hall.

Professor Julio Cesar de Souza Jr. of FURB notes that the capybara had an abscess at a fracture site that was difficult to treat.

“She had an abscess at the fracture site, she was admitted with a very ugly abscess, and this is a very difficult place to treat an infection. Rodents are also animals that are very stressed, their metabolism is different, there are not so many antibiotics that we can use,” he explains.

As for the body of the animal, the professor said that it would go to the zoological collection of the university, where it would be frozen and later used for study.
