Traveling through the Pantanal, Finnish photographers Tuomas Kiryavainen and Joonas Lavikkala captured the impressive scene of giant otters causing a jaguar to flee in a fight for survival.

The images were taken in September 2019 and received several comments online. Tuomas called it “an epic observation”. According to the photographer, the jaguar killed the baby otter and tried to drag him to the river bank, but to no avail.
“The fury of the otters was unimaginable, in the end the furious animals overcame the jaguar,” Tuomas wrote on Instagram.
The video shows the speed of the jaguar and the strength of the giant otters in their fight for survival. “If it were in the water, the otters would no doubt have killed the jaguar.”

Another case in Mato Grosso
Photographer Ailton Lara also took a similar photo during a tour with tourists on the São Lourenço River in Porto Jofre, Mato Grosso state. The video shows a group of giant otters pushing a jaguar on the run.

“During the dry season in the Pantanal, many animals concentrate along the rivers, bays and lakes. Due to the high biodiversity of species, attention is doubled to the most vulnerable in this scenario of great ecological importance, as one depends on the other to maintain ecosystem balance,” he wrote on his Instagram profile.
Otters are known for being sociable, playful and making a lot of noise. Popularly called water jaguars, they won’t let you down when they feel threatened.
