After the death of at least 40 dogs as a result of feeding poisoned treats in Brazil, Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) and Mapa (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply) are continuing to investigate the use of the propylene glycol component.
Mapa found ingredient contamination with monoethylene glycol, an extremely toxic substance if ingested, in other batches of Bassar feed products in addition to those previously analyzed.
On Monday (12), Anvisa banned the marketing, distribution, processing and use of two batches of Tecno Clean Industrial Ltda’s branded propylene glycol ingredient as there is a possibility that the contaminated ingredient was also distributed in food factories. for human use.
What caused the infection is not yet known, since, according to Mapa, there is no traceability of those involved and the mixing of batches of additives in different institutions without registration with the ministry has already been identified.
Mapa’s guidance is that food and chewing gum manufacturers must list the amount of propylene glycol in their warehouses and their respective manufacturers and importers, in addition to conducting analyzes of products containing this component in their composition, and indicate the amount of finished goods in stock. and is already distributed along with the component.
In the event of an inconsistent result, companies must withdraw the products and report this to the Ministry. On the Internet, many people have indicated that tutors check the packaging and do not offer propylene glycol products to animals.
Symptoms of intoxication in pets are convulsions, diarrhea, vomiting, and prostration. For caregivers, the orientation is to seek veterinary medical attention and to inform the authorities that appropriate action is being taken.
Santa Catarina has already recorded the death of at least one dog in Laguna and a puppy in Itapema.
