According to Dive, venomous animal sightings are more common on rainy days. With this in mind, the publication made this Thursday (2) on the organization’s Instagram profile presents a ranking of the most common venomous animals in Santa Catarina, check it out:
Dive also points out that in the event of accidents involving these animals, it is important to follow the following instructions:
- Wash the area with soap and water;
- Immediately transport the victim to public health services;
- If possible, take a photograph of the animal for identification;
- Do not tourniquet, cut, puncture, squeeze, suck, or pass food into this area;
- Do not drink alcohol after the incident.

1st place – Spiders
According to the Office of Epidemiological Surveillance in Santa Catarina, the brown spider (Loxosceles) and the armed spider (Phoneutria) are of greatest concern.
An estimated 4,404 accidents caused by spiders were reported in Santa Catarina in 2020. The highest incidence was associated with the brown spider.
2nd place – Bees
African bees are also among the animals that have caused a large number of incidents in Santa Catarina. According to 2020 data, 10.6% of 6,582 accidents were caused by bees.
Although they do not contain lethal poison, people who are allergic to the poison may suffer anaphylactic shock.
3rd place – Snakes
The snakes of greatest concern for venomous animal accidents in the state are Hararaka (Botrops), Cascavel (Crotalus), and True Coral (Micrurus).
In Santa Catarina, the regions with the highest frequency (per 100,000 inhabitants) of snake accidents in 2020 were the Far West, Alto Vale do Itajaí and Alto Uruguay Catarinense.
4th place – Caterpillars
The state is home to many species of caterpillars. However, according to Dive, special attention is paid to the risk of accidents. The genus Taturana (Lonomia) causes moderate to severe poisoning.
5th place – Scorpios
Scorpions of medicinal interest in Santa Catarina are represented by the genus Tityus, the main species being the brown scorpion (T. bahiensis), yellow scorpion (T. serrulatus) and spotted scorpion (T. costatus).
In 2020, 339 accidents involving scorpions were reported in Santa Catarina. In addition, Dive notes that the largest number of accidents occur in urban areas.
