The Spanish Society of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (SEORL-CCC) reminds that children under the age of five should not eat grapes on New Year’s Eve due to the risk of choking or suffocation; This fruit should also not be replaced by the intake of nuts or lacasito to the sound of New Year’s chimes.

Grapes, due to their size, slippery skin and juice inside, can cause them to be swallowed without chewing and cause a blockage in the airways, making it impossible for a child to breathe, reminds SEORL-CCC. For this reason, otolaryngologists recommend not eating them to children under five years of age, and when offered to older children, they should be skinless, pitted and cut into pieces lengthwise.

On the other hand, it is not recommended to give nuts or snacks to these minors, as hard fragments that come off when biting into them can block the airways. Remember that ground nuts should be offered to children under the age of five.

It is also helpful for adults to have some basic knowledge of first aid so that they know what to do in case of choking. In the event of an accident, it is also advisable to immediately contact the emergency service to be evaluated by an otorhinolaryngology specialist.
