Suspicion of monkeypox (MONKEYPOX – MPX) infection in a 5-year-old child led the city hall of Garuva in the north of Santa Catarina to suspend classes at the girl’s school.

From Thursday (18) the classes at the Pre-School Dente de Leite take place remotely, explains the secretary of the municipality. Activity is expected to resume on August 29 after the suspicions are cleared. (see full official note below).

A five-year-old girl developed skin rashes and pain in her legs. He is in isolation, and the family is waiting for the results of the exams.

Garuwa Prefecture issued a press release explaining that the measures taken follow the recommendations of the health minister’s technical note.

He even requires that in case of a skin rash or fever, one must go to the first-aid post.

OFFICIAL NOTE:

“In accordance with the Technical Note issued by the Minister of Health on Surveillance for Suspicious Cases of Monkeypox (MPX), and in connection with a suspected case in a school department, the guidelines are:

Isolation and additional precautions based on the transfer, until the case is abandoned, within 07 (seven) days.

In accordance with the instructions of the Minister of Health for epidemiological surveillance, intensive disinfection will be carried out in this school unit for the safe return of our students.

In this regard, the municipal secretary of education informs that classes at the Pre-School Dente de Leite will be held remotely on working days from 18 to 26/08, resuming activities as soon as the suspicion is cleared, on the 29th. /08.

Further guidance on this suspicion will be communicated to parents and the community as soon as they are received. Follow the announcements in the groups and on the official website of the Municipality of Garuva.

If a rash or fever develops, take the child to the medical center.”

• Contact with objects, fabrics (clothes, bed linen or towels) and surfaces used by the infected person;
• Through respiratory droplets or oral fluids from an infected person. Such contact may occur during intimate sexual contact, including: oral, anal and vaginal sex or touching the genitals or anus of a person infected with monkeypox;
• hugging, massaging, kissing, or talking near an infected person;
• Touching tissues and objects during sex that an infected person uses, such as bedding, towels, and sex toys.

The virus can be spread in the fluids or secretions from wounds of infected people, and the possibility of the virus being present in other body fluids, such as semen and vaginal secretions, is still under investigation.
