The Senate approved the quota for showing national films in cinemas
The measure is valid until 2033.
A measure restoring the quota for the screening of Brazilian films in cinemas was approved today by the Senate (19). According to NewspaperThe measure is valid until December 31, 2033.
Therefore, film companies will be forced to devote part of their halls to national projects with a minimum of screenings and the need to maintain a variety of titles. Another important point is that Brazilian films should be shown proportionally throughout the year.
A Ancient, the National Film Agency, will be responsible for monitoring compliance with the standards. If they fail to comply, companies may be subject to fines and warnings.
“The screen quota for Brazilian cinema is one of the main mechanisms for the reconfiguration of the audiovisual sector of our country, especially to establish the basic criteria for public access to national products and to guarantee exhibition space for Brazilian audiovisual productions,” wrote Senator Humberto Costa of PT.
A 2001 temporary measure established a new model for quotas on the screening of national films in cinemas. According to her, the mechanism will be regulated annually by presidential decree – but the last decree was signed in 2019, and after the measure expired in 2021, nothing has yet replaced it.
