Barbie: The film caused a shortage of pink paint around the world
One particular type of pink paint was so overused in production that it caused an international shortage.
BarbieNew film Greta Gerwig starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, it features beautiful sets inspired by iconic doll toys. However, unlike many rockbusters today the sets for the film were actually made, so the making of the film resulted in a worldwide shortage of pink paint.
In an interview with Architectural Digest about the film’s set, director Greta Gerwig revealed that he insisted that everything should be pink for the feature, as “the main thing was to keep the childlike essence”. To do this, the director hired a production designer Sarah Greenwood and decorator, Cathy Spencer.
“I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything had to be a bit over the top” Gerwig said, saying she didn’t want to put off “What I liked about Barbie as a child.”
green Forest told the magazine that the design of the sets had resulted in Rosco’s fluorescent pink paints being in international short supply, “No more pink in the world”she said laughing. The director also revealed that she tried to create the feeling “true artificiality” in film sets, even using canvas to paint sky and mountain landscapes instead of using special effects.
Barbie debut in July 20 to the cinema.
