Preview – We Tested One Piece: Odyssey, Bandai Namco’s New RPG, at BGS 2022

The fair presents to the public the unprecedented adventure of the Straw Hat Pirate.

Brasil Game Show, the largest gaming fair in Latin America, takes place in Sao Paulo and introduces the public to a series of incredible games. OUR Bandai Namco this year saw the highly anticipated adventure of anime’s most famous pirate, Luffy, in an incredible showcase One part: Odyssey.

The official release of the game is scheduled for January 13, 2023but the PS4 version was available for bench testing Game console as well as Samsung. The South Korean giant has even prepared a special themed room for fans to fully immerse themselves in this pirate adventure.

The demo follows the same snippet as during Anime Expo 2022.

The demo has about 20 minutes of RPG that combines exploration and combat with a touch of history to show viewers a little bit of how the universe is Eiichiro Oda was carried over to the games.

Appearance is the first thing that catches your eye. While emphasizing the anime aesthetic, the scripts bring a touch of realism that works well to present the idea that these more cartoonish dolls exist in the real world. The trail is very reminiscent Quest for the Dragon XIfrom the same studio, and Tales of Arise, also from Bandai.

It’s no coincidence that the aesthetics are reminiscent of the great JRPG companies. At its core, Odyssey follows the genre’s foundations in a literal sense – a graceful story, turn-based combat, and plenty of exploration.

The anime aesthetic draws in the audience.

In the short time that we were with the game, you could see how all these elements come together very organically, always respecting the atmosphere of the anime. Especially when there are scenarios in the script where some kind of unusual interaction between the characters changes the conditions of the fight.

At some point, for example, Usopp ends up being knocked out in battle by a funny historical incident. During the fight, the hero cannot actually attack, and the goal of the fight is to defeat the enemies before they finish off the pirate. A fun anime-inspired idea that makes every encounter unpredictable.

Animation moves can be used like spells, with each type having an advantage over certain enemies. Choosing the best order for your allies in combat, taking into account the advantages and order of the opponents, becomes a constant tactical challenge, bringing dynamism to the turn system.

Skirmishes were easy to win, at least in the demo.

Exploring the island is also a lot of fun, even if the chosen site is somewhat linear – probably so that the audience of the event does not get lost. But in order to cross some areas, one had to use Luffy’s power to stretch his arms, which works quite intuitively. Just hold down one trigger to aim and pull the other to throw it like a hook. Basically shot from shootercorresponds to the name Gomu Gomu no Pistol.

It was impossible to test how other characters might impact exploration, but what little we saw in BGS made us look forward to what the final game had in store for us. If you’re at an event in the coming days, be sure to check it out. Especially at the Samsung booth where there is room for fans.
