This Friday afternoon (8), the Civil Police discovered the authorship of the crime of extortion against a resident of Blumenau. The victim fell for the “new girls scam” in 2021 and lost more than R$20,000.
The investigation was carried out by DRFR (Department of Theft and Robbery Control), which was investigating a crime that occurred on March 15, 2021, when the victim was attracted to a fake female social media profile.
According to the corporation, a resident of Blumenau began to be blackmailed after receiving intimate photographs from a fake profile. The criminals pretended to be police officers and lawyers to take money from him.
Yielding to blackmail, the man deposited 23 thousand reais into the scammers’ account. Having no money to continue making payments, he committed suicide on March 23 of that year.
Investigation into ‘new girl scam’ begins after victim’s family discovers messages
According to the Civil Police, the man’s family learned about the extortion through his mobile phone and contacted the corporation.
During the investigation, the perpetrators of the “coup d’etat” were identified, represented by their preventive arrest. The request was reviewed by the Ministry of Justice, and the court issued a decision on arrest.
Police issued an arrest warrant for the 33-year-old man, who was already in custody at the Arroio dos Town Hall State Prison in Rio Grande do Sul. According to police, he committed the crimes while inside the prison.
