A year after the landslide that hit BR-476, Arteris Litoral Sul announced this Wednesday (6) the final phase of work on the site. The accident occurred at the 668th kilometer of the highway on November 28, 2022, resulting in the death of two people.
Although several interventions have already been carried out, the site is now undergoing final work and the slope restoration has been completed. Work is due to begin later this month and be completed in October 2024. Once completed, the lane towards Florianópolis will be cleared and the highway will return to its original configuration.
According to Arteris, negotiations with ANTT (National Land Transport Agency) are necessary to obtain permission to carry out the work, since 80% of the work will take place outside the company’s concession.
However, according to the concessionaire, the investment exceeded 25 million reais. Mobilization includes excavation, shotcrete, soil retention (terramesh) and road reconstruction. Thanks to these actions, it was possible to completely restore traffic in the northbound direction (Curitiba) and two lanes in the southbound direction (Florianópolis). A high-strength dynamic shielding installation was installed at the site of the landslide.
After the landslide that occurred at the end of 2022, no new phenomena of the same nature were recorded at this place. Arteris Litoral Sul says it has an ongoing slope monitoring program on its right-of-way.
In addition, the concessionaire monitors rainfall in the region in real time, as well as a number of other indicators such as drainage blockages and mass movement, and continuously facilitates field inspections with its crews.
If necessary, the concessionaire provides support to the Federal Traffic Police (PRF) in emergency traffic closures. The same procedure is still followed for release when the lanes have favorable structural conditions for vehicles to pass with maximum safety.
Remember the case
The BR-376 landslide occurred after heavy rains hit the region on November 28, 2022. As a result, cars were buried and trucks were dragged along the ground. As a result of the tragedy, two people were killed and 14 were injured.
The victims were identified as Marcio Rogerio de Souza, 51. The driver’s family recognized their relative’s truck in photographs taken after the landslide. “We have already been able to determine that his truck is there, it has already been seen on drone images, the tracking company has also confirmed it,” said Marcio’s son-in-law Thiago Jaworski.
The other driver killed after the landslide was 60-year-old Joao Maria Pires. He was driving a red container ship that was “hanging” on the embankment. An eyewitness to the accident said that he saw the driver fall onto an embankment while trying to get out of the cab.
Due to the landslide, the area was closed for more than a week, and after being released it was blocked again several times due to rain and the risk of further incidents. Since then, work has been underway at the site, with completion scheduled for October 2024.
