Water is fundamental to human life, and in this context, the management of this resource becomes fundamental. Finding potable water is the responsibility of the public throughout the entire chain of collection, treatment and distribution.
In Blumenau, the Samae Blumenau (Municipal Autonomous Water Supply and Sewerage Service) carries out a strict quality analysis so that only then the liquid can be consumed in the homes of thousands of Blumenau residents.
In the series of special reports “Sou + Consciente” you will learn about the processes and importance of water treatment in Blumenau. All analytical work is carried out at the Samae Central Laboratory in ETA II.
Technicians work to identify possible contamination during testing. Everything to ensure compliance with current sanitary standards. In the central laboratory, Samae’s team analyzes basic water parameters such as pH, turbidity, color, residual fluoride and chlorine. “Besides this, there is the most important part – the microbiological part, that is, the total amount of coliforms,” explains the chemist responsible for Samae, Janor Fernandez.
Do you know why it is important to have a water tank at home?
Now that you know the entire process of purifying the water that comes into your home’s tap, having a suitable water tank is an important issue.
This is because the container plays a fundamental role in keeping the liquid entering the water tank clean. To ensure that the resource is consumed with the same quality as from the reservoirs of Samae in Blumenau, a certain amount of care is necessary, as the municipality’s chemist explained.
“Samae provides advice on maintenance and cleaning of this type of device. And you should always keep it sealed. This way, you keep it in ideal conditions of use, preventing, for example, vectors, rats and cockroaches from being inside, which could ultimately contaminate the water.”
To determine whether water is in ideal condition for drinking, we recommend monitoring the color of the liquid. “If a color or strange smell starts to appear, that’s a sign that something is wrong,” Fernandez says.
How to clean the water tank?
The cleaning process is simple. Using clean rags, protective gear and gloves, the chemist teaches that cleaning equipment with bleach is simple.
“You don’t have to use any other products, you don’t have to use detergent, you don’t have to use soap or anything, basically just bleach. Therefore, you will have to take some care, such as closing the faucet and shower outlets before cleaning, because otherwise dirt will end up on your home’s equipment. After you scrub and clean, you have to refill it.”
In addition, Fernandez points out that for the final disinfection, some bleach must be added again, “because it always leaves traces of dirt behind. The setting you use is two liters for every thousand liters of water. Then you leave it on for 2 hours and then it runs out. [tira a água] again”.
Samae recommends cleaning your water tank every six months. “One of the most important things is to leave it well sealed so that the vectors we mentioned earlier don’t get in.”
