A 25-year-old man was arrested by police in India on charges of using a venomous snake as a murder weapon to bite his wife Basanti Patra and their 2-year-old daughter Debasmita on the night of October 6. K. Ganesh Patra released the snake and closed the doors.
Kabisuryanagar police station inspector Pravat Sahu informed about the situation. An autopsy of the woman and daughter confirmed that death was due to a snake bite. Information taken from Hisdusttimes website.
Conversations to get a poisonous snake
After investigation, the police found that before the incident, there were conversations between Patra and several snake charmers to procure a poisonous snake.
“Around 5:45 am, he started shouting that his wife and daughter had died due to snake bite. Although the autopsy of the woman and her daughter confirmed their death from snakebite, her father felt that there was something wrong with the entire incident and asked the police to investigate further. After the incident, the investigator examined the accused’s call data and found that he had spoken with snake charmers several times before the incident. On September 26, Patra was given a SIM card in her father’s name and used it to call several snake charmers to procure a poisonous snake. He claimed that he needed the snake for worship in the temple of Lord Shiva.”
On October 6, snake charmer Basanta Acharya grabbed a snake he had rescued from his house and handed it over to Patra in a plastic jar.
Motive of the crime
According to the police, the accused wanted to take revenge from his wife as he had filed a dowry torture case against him a year ago.
“After the wedding in 2020, they remained happy and had a daughter. But soon, marital discord began between the couple and in October 2022, a case was registered against the accused under Section 498A (which deals with the husband or relative of a woman’s husband subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC.”
