170 mobile phones were seized hidden in the backs of two cars on BR-282 in Maravilla, western Santa Catarina. The action of the PRF (Federal Traffic Police) and PM (Military Police) took place on Thursday afternoon (23).
Police ordered a nearby Honda/HRV and GM/Tracker to stop. Both cars had poorly installed taillights, which attracted police attention.
According to the PRF and the Prime Minister, the smartphones were illegally imported from Paraguay. According to PRF, when the wreckage was opened, boxes for mobile phones were found in the body cavities.
The search continued and more boxes were found in panel and fender cavities, totaling 88 devices in one car and 82 in the other. In total, 170 cell phones are hidden in the back.
None of the drivers provided any evidence of payment of import duties. The suspects said they bought the goods in Foz do Iguaçu/PR to resell them in the Chapeco region.
Both were taken to the Chapeco Federal Police, where they were charged with embezzlement. Tax crimes generate economic losses for the country and represent unfair competition for local traders.
