Two-year-old Apollo’s mother, Kalieli Rodriguez, said her son did not want to go to kindergarten and cried a lot before he was placed in the school van. The child’s destination was a kindergarten, but the monitor and driver forgot him inside the car and he died.
The child has only used the van for 4 months since he was enrolled in kindergarten. Kalieli stated that she had not had the best day and that she felt something strange, but she had to go to work.
Apollo was forgotten inside a van that was left in the parking lot between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The incident occurred during a heat wave that hit Sao Paulo on one of the hottest days of the year, with temperatures reaching almost 40C.
The child was only seen inside the vehicle when the driver approached the van to pick up the children at the end of the day.
According to the mother, the boy was usually placed in the front seat, but that day he was placed in the back. It was only after she left work that her family informed her that her son was in the hospital.
The child was picked up by a van every day at 7:30 a.m. and returned to his grandmother Lusineta Rodrigues dos Santos at 4:15 p.m. The grandmother reported that she waited until 16:40, and her grandson had not yet arrived. She would still have found it strange that the children were being returned by another van, since the ordinary “aunt” was feeling unwell.
The driver and monitor were arrested red-handed. The couple will have a custody hearing this Wednesday (15).
