The body of a 47-year-old ferryman, who disappeared on Wednesday (18), was found in the Uruguay River on Tuesday morning (24). The man was about 15 km from where the ferry capsized. Flavio Tobaldini drove the ferry that traveled between Alto Bela Vista in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

Search teams from the military fire departments of Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, as well as the Brazilian military environmental and maritime brigade, are patrolling along the river from Wednesday (18) to Tuesday (24).

At the time of the accident, in addition to Flavio, there were a flight attendant and a truck driver on board the ship, which was passing through the crossing. The assistant and the truck driver managed to swim across and escape, but Flavio disappeared.

The accident occurred around 7 a.m. while the ferry was transporting a truckload of bricks from Alto Bela Vista/SC to Marcelino Ramos/RS.

The structure capsized shortly after leaving the Santa Catarina shore and was dragged about three kilometers by the force of the water, according to South Carolina Civil Defense.

The truck driver and ferryman’s assistant remained on the roof of the ferry until they were rescued by local residents who approached the ship in a boat in the community of Vicentes.
