At least thirty public transport buses in Rio de Janeiro were set on fire this Monday (23) after the death of the nephew of policeman Zinho.
The attack in the Western Zone was reported to have taken place in response to civilian police action in which Mateus Resende, known as Faustan, was shot dead in the community of Tres Pontes.
The suspect and his accomplice were rescued and taken to Pedro II Hospital, but did not survive their injuries. Information taken from the R7 Portal.
According to police, Mateus is considered the second-in-command in the region’s police hierarchy.
The attack brought BRT service to a standstill.
The city of Rio entered a mobilization phase around 16:50 due to the attacks. This is the second level – on a five-point scale – which takes into account the risks of serious events in the municipality.
The military police and fire service were also involved in extinguishing the fire. For security reasons, the Transeste corridor lines in the city remain interrupted.
A spokesman for Rio Onibus, the company coordinating the BRT, said that in addition to the burned out buses, there were barricades and blocked roads.
The situation is affecting Cariocas’ return home as companies have decided to take away or stop buses. There are no reports of injuries.
policeman’s nephew
The man killed by Rio police is the nephew of Luis António da Silva Braga, one of the most wanted criminals in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
He took over leadership of the militia, which operates in the western zone, following the death of his brother, who was also a member of the militia, Wellington da Silva Braga, known as Eco, in 2021.
