After an attempted invasion of private property in Canoinhas, in the Northern Planalto of Santa Catarina, this Saturday (21) members of the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) settled on another plot of land in the municipality of Mayor Vieira. The attempt in Canoinhas was thwarted by the swift action of the Prime Minister (military police), who had the support of the state premier’s command.

Throughout the day, the Prime Minister negotiated for MST members to leave the site and the Prime Minister’s command sent a helicopter to assist the police response.
The Prime Minister’s action was peaceful and there was no need to use force to demobilize the occupation on the ground. Canoinhas Mayor Juliana Maciel Hoppe (PSDB) posted a video on social media condemning the MST’s actions and congratulating the Prime Minister’s work there.
“The Santa Catarina Military Police have once again returned order and security to the municipality of Canoinhas. Many thanks to Governor Jorginho Mello, who was also concerned about this operation, and to Federal Deputy Caroline de Toni, who also helped us throughout the day,” said the mayor. The Governor gave clear instructions to the Prime Minister to do everything possible to return the property.

Canoinhas PM commander Lieutenant Colonel Sasinski spoke in detail about the actions of agents during negotiations to liberate private territory. According to him, MST leaders were taken to the police station and must answer for crimes related to damage, possession of bladed weapons and “all violations and breaches of order committed on the spot.”

After leaving Canoinhas, the group moved to another private property in Mayor Vieira. The Prime Minister carried out large-scale actions in the region on Monday morning (23) and demobilized the invasion of the city of Gleba Toldo de Sima.
There were about 20 people at the scene, including women and children. Some of these people were escorted to the nearest town from where they would continue on to their hometowns, the prime minister said. The area occupied by the MST in Mayor Vieira is close to the settlement included in the agrarian reform in August this year.
Canoinhas hosts soldiers of the Army’s 5th Armored Cavalry Brigade from Ponta Grossa (PNR), who are undergoing training and also patrolling the region. They are expected to remain in the city for the next few days.
