Custom racing cars, drivers in suits and ramps with foam as obstacles. These were some of the elements that marked the “Crazy Race” that took place last Sunday (15) in Schröder, a town in the north of Santa Catarina. However, despite the cheerful proposal, the event ended with several people injured. This is due to some vehicles flipping over after driving through obstacles.

The victims were treated at the city volunteer fire department. A total of 15 people were rescued on the spot, eight of whom had to be taken to hospital. One of them underwent surgery due to her injuries and remains hospitalized.
According to volunteer fire chief Jose Felix, one of the points of attention was the design and safety of the carts and pilots. This is due, for example, to the fact that some people did not use safety grab bars in their vehicles, which are necessary to prevent serious injuries.
“One of the main factors here is the production of non-motorized vehicles themselves, [precisam ter] all safety items, protective bars, so that in the event of a rollover, a person does not receive serious injuries,” he comments.

Firefighters said it was difficult to reach one of the victims. “It was a very large audience, we had to work hard to get access to the victim and get her to the hospital,” he says.
The organizers of the event reported ND Group that the drivers signed the liability terms and understood the risks of the Crazy Race. In addition, the event provides insurance for medical reasons and disability, the organization says.

Stupid racing permits
Through lawyer Diego Bsayer, Schroeder’s mayor’s office announced that it had approved the use of the street for Crazy Races. Despite the injuries, the law does not provide for fines, and the rules for such events are still being discussed. Since the organization is exclusively private and did not have municipal support or sponsorship, it is understood that all responsibility lies with the organizing company, the prosecutor said.
“But in a future edition, if this does happen, there will be some guidelines put together on clearing out a public road or space for this type of event,” Bsayer said.
Also, according to the prosecutor, if the company wants to organize the event again, it will require a number of requirements, which were discussed together with the military police and volunteer firefighters this week.
The military fire department, which is responsible for issuing permits, said it was not notified of the incident and would now investigate the matter and review the legal implications.
