Two stolen trucks were discovered by the PRF (Federal Traffic Police) this Tuesday (17) during a check on BR-101 in Itapema, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina, and Biguaçu, in Greater Florianópolis. Cars were running with cloned license plates.
The trucks were stolen more than three months ago
According to PRF, late Tuesday night agents approached a Toyota/Hilux in Itapema with apparent Florianópolis license plates, driven by a 37-year-old man.
However, a check of the vehicle revealed that the truck was in fact registered in Bombinhas and had a theft/robbery record since May 2023.
Early in the evening in Biguaçu, PRF stopped a 43-year-old man driving a jeep/compass with Itu (SP) plates. During the investigation, the team found that some identification marks had been forged and the plates had been cloned.
The vehicle was registered in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and was registered for theft/robbery in São Paulo for three months. Both drivers were taken to the police station and charged with receiving stolen property and falsifying vehicle identification.
According to Law No. 9426 of December 24, 1996, the crime of qualified reception is qualified as “acquiring, receiving, transporting, carrying out […] or use in any way for your own benefit or the benefit of others […] something which must be known to be the product of a crime.”
Therefore, the penalty is imprisonment for a term of three to eight years in addition to a fine. Forgery of registration plate, that is, “falsifying or altering the chassis number or any identification mark of a motor vehicle,” is punishable by imprisonment of three to six years and a fine as prescribed by law.
