An 18-year-old man died after being hit by a freight train in Guaramirim, northern Santa Catarina, on Monday evening (11). The accident occurred on Enrique Friedman Street in the city center around 9:20 p.m.
The victim was identified as Pedro Enrique de Santana. According to information, he was on the roof of the train when he fell due to being hit by a telephone wire. Falling between the cars, Pedro was hit by a train. He was rescued by volunteer firefighters, suffered multiple injuries and was taken in critical condition to the Santo Antonio hospital, but, unfortunately, could not survive serious injuries and died after being admitted to the medical unit.
The concessionaire Rumo Logística, responsible for operating the railway, commented on the incident and expressed regret about what happened. The company stressed the importance of safety near railway tracks and emphasized the need to avoid risky behavior such as trying to cross between cars or hitchhiking on trains.
The company confirmed this with a statement: “The driver may not always be able to visualize situations where people are putting themselves in danger due to the size of the trains. Access to the operational area is limited to industry professionals.”
