Mayor Topazio said he will renegotiate the contract with Casan (Companhia Catarinense de Águas e Saneamento) after a reservoir break in the Monte Cristo area of Florianopolis early this Wednesday (6). The plate that suspended the tank broke, and 8 million liters of water poured out in the neighborhood. Already 92 houses have been destroyed and 250 people have died.
According to the mayor, it is necessary to evaluate the causes of the accident and the services provided by Casan, which needs financial conditions to fulfill contracts.
“We gave Kazan a deadline to submit a schedule of work needed for the city. The term ends at the end of October. According to the response, we will take the necessary actions,” said Topazio, who is awaiting his return trip from South Korea.
Casan’s technical teams are conducting a survey of the region to ensure that the area is no longer at risk. It is predicted that the collapsed structure will be demolished.
A spokesman for the company said that all people whose houses were destroyed will be taken to hotels: “Today everyone will have a place to sleep,” he said.
Community mobilizes to help those affected
Part of the affected population lives in Capela Rosa Mística and receives assistance from volunteers. Beatriz Silveira, Somar network volunteer, said the organization has already received several donations and says food will be provided for everyone this Wednesday.
The volunteer is also asking people to donate basic food baskets, clothing, cleaning supplies and milk to be delivered to the Somar headquarters. For more information on how to donate, please call (48) 98441-0217.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the breakup.
Several residents said they had already received complaints about the violation of the structure. On Wednesday morning, the 29th prosecutor’s office of the capital district launched a civil investigation (6) to find out the reason for the breakthrough of the Kazan reservoir and to count the number of victims. Responsibility for the rupture of the reservoir will be determined by the MPSC (Ministry of Santa Catarina).
Prosecutor Wilson Paulo Mendonza Neto is requesting information from the Civil Defense, Fire and Military Police, such as photographs and details of the assistance provided. The prosecutor also demands that the scientific police of Santa Catarina conduct an examination on the spot in order to determine the amount of damage caused.
“The situation presented is regrettable and requires a concerted effort to alleviate the suffering of those affected and restore basic services. In this sense, the work of the 29th prosecutor’s office will develop,” adds the prosecutor.
The structure collapsed at about 2 am on Wednesday. Despite the fact that the records have already been closed, water is still flowing from some pipes. The cleanup is fast, with a lot of rubbish already cleared to allow for the passage of vehicles that can help.
