A Brazilian who escaped from the Chester County Jail in Pennsylvania, USA last Thursday (31) may have received help from family members. Danilo Sousa Cavalcante, 34, was sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend Deborah Brandão with 38 stab wounds in front of her two children in 2021.
Information taken from Portal R7. Prosecutor Deb Ryan said people close to him could be prosecuted if help is confirmed.
Deb reported to CBS News that Cavalcante was already helping the family when he committed the crime, but was eventually arrested.
“He fatally stabbed her 38 times in broad daylight in front of their 4- and 7-year-old children. He then fled and was helped by family and friends,” Deb said.
The prosecutor also said that Cavalcante may be trying to return to Brazil. In 2021, the Brazilian escaped after Deborah’s murder but was captured in Virginia. Authorities believe his ultimate goal was to travel to Mexico and then to Brazil.
Brazilian man seen after escaping from prison
Cavalcante was spotted in the early hours of last Saturday (2) when a security camera caught him in Pocopson Township, about 2.5 kilometers from the prison he escaped from. According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, “he was wearing trousers, a light T-shirt and white trainers” – the same clothes he wore during the escape.
So far, more than 100 leads have been received, according to CBS, but none have resulted in Cavalcante’s arrest. Police mobilized hundreds of local detectives, as well as state and federal police forces, to capture and offered a reward of up to US$5,000 (R$24,739) for information on the Brazilian’s whereabouts.
