During an inspection of a BR-470 in Blumenau, a driver was caught transporting 19 illegally harvested wild birds. The PRF (Federal Highway Police) found the birds in the trunk of a Ford Ka with Itajaí license plates around 21:00 this Monday (28).
Birds of the legally protected Trinca Ferro species were transported in shoeboxes and in a cage inside a car.
According to traffic police, the driver and passenger said they were hunting birds in Itaiopolis, on the northern plateau of Santa Catarina, and would transport them to Itajai. A hunting net and two stereos were also found in the car, which were used as a “song” to attract birds.
After the arrival of the police, the birds were handed over to the environmental military police. A driver and passenger already caught for the same crime in 2021 will be liable under the Detailed Penalty (DPC) for the crime of collecting and transporting wildlife species without permission from environmental authorities.
