The National Competitiveness Rankings released this Wednesday (23) 2023 report and placed Santa Catarina 2nd in the overall ranking, behind only São Paulo, with a focus on 1st in public safety, human capital and social security. sustainability.

The rating evaluates 10 directions based on 99 indicators. The purpose of the study is to provide data and metrics to help inform decision-making so that leaders can develop confident public policies and private companies know where to invest their resources.

The worst rankings for Santa Catarina were for environmental sustainability (5th) and financial sustainability (7th). In addition, it ranked second on the ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) and SDG (sustainable development goals) indicators.

Governor Jorginho Mello commented on the feat: “This rating reflects our people. People who work hard and achieve results. Government needs to create opportunities and that’s what we’re doing. This is a collective effort of the state and society as a whole.”

The remarkable progress in the area of ​​human capital, which showed an impressive increase of 23 positions last year, is mainly due to the formality in the labor market and the economic integration of youth and adults. On the other hand, the study highlights the need to reduce labor costs.

The leadership in social resilience can be attributed to the reduction in income inequality in the state, as well as low infant mortality and the existence of a small number of families below the poverty line compared to the other 27 states of the federation. However, the study highlights the high cost of basic sanitation as a major concern.

The good performance in the field of public safety is mainly due to the reduction of the shortage of prisons and diseases on the roads, as well as ensuring the personal and property security of the state. Progress has also been made in the criminal justice system. However, the rating points to the need for an urgent rethinking of public policy to combat sexual violence.

Santa Catarina remained in the top three for innovation, public machine efficiency and infrastructure, but came fourth in the Market Potential category. The National Competitiveness Ranking was compiled by the Center for Political Leadership (CLP) in partnership with Gove and Seall and evaluates different areas.

According to Tadeu Barros, CEO of CLP, the organization responsible for the study, “The ranking data should contribute to the public administration of municipalities based on concrete evidence. “It means putting an end to ‘guessing’ and analyzing performance and results.”

Santa Catarina’s main concerns are environmental sustainability and financial sustainability. The report highlights financial solvency as an important issue for the state, as well as the slow recovery of degraded areas and the lack of transparency in efforts to combat deforestation.

Florianopolis is the most competitive city in Brazil

The capital Florianopolis tops the list of the most competitive cities in Brazil, ahead of Sao Paulo (2nd position) and Porto Alegre (3rd position). The survey assessed 410 Brazilian cities with more than 80,000 inhabitants. For this study, CLP assessed 65 key indicators for municipalities, including enrollment in basic education and time to start a business.

The excellent performance of the capital of Santa Catarina is mainly due to human capital, innovation capacity and economic dynamism. The quality of health is a highlight, given its amazing rise of 26 positions from last year to the top of the rankings.

On the other hand, Florianopolis still has a lot of problems, such as basic sanitation, telecommunications and the quality of education – the latter has dropped 26 places and is now at 247 in the rankings.
