Florianópolis invests in the conservation of its watercourses through a hydrographic cleaning program. Since January 2021, the macro drainage team of SMMADS (Municipal Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development) has been cleaning drainage channels and other water systems throughout the city daily, using a carefully planned procedure to ensure adequate rainwater drainage.
According to the secretariat, the standard cleaning procedure varies depending on the nature of the watercourse and is adapted for natural or tap water, and for different levels of technology use.
The cleaning procedure consists of several steps, which include the removal of debris, residues, brushwood and logs that obstruct the flow of water, the removal of floating vegetation from the surface, the cleaning of grassy vegetation on the banks, and the removal of sediments accumulated in the bed from the canal.
Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Florianopolis Fabio Braga notes that the main goal of the cleaning and maintenance service is to improve the drainage of rainwater in order to avoid floods, overflows and floods.
“By removing elements that disrupt the flow of watercourses, the initiative plays a critical role in preventing problems associated with heavy rains, thereby contributing to the safety and quality of life of residents of the capital,” he says.
The collected material is disposed of in an environmentally sound manner, with the possibility of disposal on the outskirts when disposal becomes impossible.
To ensure efficient operation, the city hall has a specialized technical staff consisting of three engineers and 21 members of the hydrographic cleaning team. The team works throughout the municipality, covering regions such as Abraan, Agronomica, Barra da Lagoa, Jurere, Centro and many more.

Completed work in the north of the island
In May of this year, work was completed to discharge water runoff into the rainwater drainage network of the Papakuara and Braz river basins in the northern area of Florianopolis.
According to the mayor’s office of the capital, clean-up work was carried out in artificial drainage channels along 32 km of the system’s length.
