A 14-day-old baby was rescued by the military fire brigade of Ypora do Oeste, west of Santa Catarina, after he choked on his breast milk. The rescue took place over the weekend and was captured on the surveillance cameras of one of the firefighters.
A worried mother was looking for the military fire department of the city with her daughter in her arms. The child, according to rescuers, was conscious, but had signs of suffocation.
According to the mother, she was breastfeeding the child when the girl began to cough and it became difficult to breathe. The mother attempted to use the tapping technique to clear her daughter’s airway, but she suspected that the obstruction had not completely cleared.
The mother and friend immediately took the child to the fire station. The child had a persistent cough and signs of difficulty breathing.
The prehospital care team laid the child down for the taping procedure. The technique was effective and led to the elimination of a small amount of milk. According to firefighters, the baby then began to cry, indicating that her airways were open again.
The child was taken to the hospital for examination.
After the examination, the rescuers took the girl to the Nossa Senhora das Mercês hospital for a deeper medical analysis. “This measure is aimed at ensuring that there are no complications associated with an episode of suffocation, even after on-site cleaning,” the rescue team emphasized.
The quick and efficient pre-hospital care provided by firefighters in Ypora do Oeste was essential for the child’s recovery. Timely care of the mother and seeking help have demonstrated the importance of prompt action in cases of choking, especially in infants.
“The military fire department emphasizes the importance of those responsible for children being always ready to act in emergency situations, and advises the public to seek professional help in such cases,” he added.
The Santa Catarina Military Fire Department has a basic emergency response course so that the public knows how to act in such cases. Training is free and takes place online.
