The head of the IS (Islamic State) jihadist group in Syria was killed in a US drone strike, Centrcom (U.S. Central Command in the Middle East) reported on Sunday (9).
Usamaal-Muhajer was killed in a strike in eastern Syria on Friday, General Michael Kurilla, head of Centcom, said in a statement.
“We have made it clear that we remain committed to defeating the Islamic State throughout the region,” he said.
“IS continues to pose a threat not only to the region, but beyond,” he added.
No civilians were killed in the bombing, according to Centcom. However, the forces of the international coalition led by the United States, created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State, registered the dead civilian.
The bombing was carried out by the same MQ-9 [drones americanos] which (…) were attacked by Russian military aircraft,” Centcom noted.
US drones involved in operations against ISIS in Syria were attacked by Russian warplanes on Thursday for the second time in 24 hours, a US commander said.
The ISIS group has seized vast territories in Syria and Iraq as a result of, among other things, the war in Syria that began in 2011.
The IS caliphate in Syria was defeated in 2019, but the coalition remains in the country to fight jihadist groups that are still active in the region. The war in Syria has claimed the lives of nearly half a million people, displaced millions and devastated the country.
