Santa Catarina recorded five violent deaths of LGBTI+ – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and others – in 2022. Data taken from Dossier on LGBTI+ Deaths and Violence in Brazil. The survey found that, on average, one person from this group dies every 32 hours in Brazil due to gender or sexual orientation.
The dossier was jointly prepared by three organizations: Lugar Arte e Política LGBTI+, Antra (National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals) and ABGLT (Brazilian Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite, Transgender and Intersex).
In the LGBTI+ state, people have occurred in four cities: two violent deaths in Blumenau, one in Lajes, one in Ararangua, and one in Tayo.
In the southern region, Paraná leads with 10 violent deaths, while Rio Grande do Sul has four deaths.
According to the dossier, Santa Catarina recorded 0.64 deaths per million, making this state one of the least violent in Brazil in this regard. The south is also the region with the lowest rate in Brazil, with 0.62 deaths per million.
The study linked the South East and South index to investments that have historically targeted regions.
“The Southeast and South regions have historically been privileged in terms of capital accumulation and productive investment, which characterizes them as spaces with high industrial concentration, higher technological development and a significant level of education and access to information for their population, factors that may contribute to a less biased, violent and hostile reality towards the LGBTI+ population,” they explain.
