The confusion continues after Russia’s devastating attack on the city of Bakhmut, one of the epicenters of the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this Sunday that, based on the information he is considering at the moment, Ukrainian forces still retain some control over the city, although he indicated that the city has been completely destroyed.

Some statements that do not confirm what the Russian president has said through a statement from the Kremlin. Putin congratulated Wagner’s mercenaries and the Russian military on what he called the “liberation” of Bakhmut, which Russia calls its Soviet name Artemovsk. The Russian statement claims that the longest and bloodiest battle of the 15-month war ended in Russian victory.

“I don’t think so,” the president replied, referring to a question during the G7 summit about whether Russian troops had taken control of the city.

Zelensky added that the city was completely destroyed. “Nothing is left. Today, Bakhmut is only in our hearts,” he added in statements sent out by the White House press service during a meeting that Zelensky is currently holding with US President Joe Biden at the Hiroshima (Japan) summit.
