Archbishop Dom Orani Joao Tempesta was attacked in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro on Friday (December 12) around 10:30 pm. Information released by the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro indicates that he and the driver remained on foot on Avenida Brasil after the car was stolen. Despite this, neither was hurt.
The episode occurred when they were returning from the Rosary for Peace, which they prayed in Bangu, and were moving towards the city center. In addition to the car, cell phones of the archbishop and the driver, a bishop’s ring, fraternal clothing, a staff, books and watches were confiscated.
According to the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, the victims were rescued by a married couple who took them to the residence of the archbishop. Although he was impressed, the House of Orani kept their meeting schedule unchanged.
