The new edition of the Saneamento ranking, Trata Brasil’s report on wastewater treatment and water supply in the 100 largest Brazilian cities, shows that Santa Catarina’s three most populous municipalities – Joinville, Florianopolis and Blumenau – still have a lot of work to do to do.

Joinville was among the 30 worst performing municipalities, ranking 74th. In the previous edition, the city ranked 78th. Capital ranked 59th, moving up one spot from the previous year. Blumenau fell: he moved from 66th to 68th place.

Released since 2009, the report analyzes indicator data from the SNIS (National Sanitation Information System) published by the Ministry of Cities. This year’s edition considers data for 2021. The study evaluates service level, service improvement, and efficiency levels.

The report shows that while urban wastewater collection is just beginning, the distribution of drinking water has been consolidated. Joinville and Florianopolis are among the 46 Brazilian cities with 100% of the population.

Florianopolis moved up one position

The capital of Santa Catarina moved up one position in the rankings, increasing its total wastewater collection by 0.42% between 2020 and 2021 – about 65.71% of residents are served by this service. Taking into account the period from 2017 to 2021, the growth was 2.73%.

Considering only the Brazilian capitals, Florianopolis is in 15th position. The city is inferior to all the capitals in the south of the country: Curitiba in 2nd place, with 99% coverage of the sewer network and 15th in the overall ranking; Porto Alegre finished 14th among the Capitals and 49th overall.

In January, Florianopolis City Hall announced the Pacto pelo Saneamento program, which allocates 20 million reais annually from the budget for the area, funding the connection to the sewer network in the homes of the most vulnerable residents and the creation of a drainage plan. .

Blumenau stands out in revenue

Blumenau stands out among Brazilian municipalities where there is less water loss or billing sloppiness. The municipality of Vale do Itajaí ranked 21st in the IPF (Billing Loss Index), a measure that evaluates the amount of water produced by municipalities but not billed.

The lower the percentage, the better: this means that less of the water produced is lost or not paid for. In the case of Blumenau, about 87% of the water produced in the municipality is billed.

In the most valued municipalities, such as Campina Grande (Paraiba), Petropolis (Rio de Janeiro) and Serra (Espirito Santo), the index is over 90% – less than 10% of the produced water is not paid for or lost. with a report.

A total of ten municipalities out of 100 assessed have 100% wastewater collection. A further 28 municipalities have a collectivity greater than or equal to 90% and therefore can also be considered universal under the law.

The cities of São Paulo São José do Rio Preto and Santos lead the rankings, ranking first and second respectively. Minas Gerais Uberlandia ranks third.

In the south, Paraná is distinguished by elementary sanitary conditions. Six cities in the state are in the top 20: Sao Jose dos Pinhais, Cascavel, Ponta Grossa, Maringa, Curitiba and Londrina.

In all of Brazil, the lowest percentage of the population served by wastewater collection services in the sample was 0.73% in the municipality of Maraba, Pennsylvania. The city occupies the penultimate place in the ranking. At the bottom of the ranking is the capital of Macapa in Amapa.
