A 47-year-old woman (aged 15) was arrested this Wednesday for a dog abuse offense in the Vargem Grande area of Florianopolis. According to civilian police, the caretaker did not take care of the wounds of the animal and left him with open injuries.
According to Delegate Marjolie Valcareggi, holder of the DPA (Department of Animal Welfare), the dog was in this state for about ten days. “The animal’s caregiver received free veterinary care and medication to treat the animal’s wounds,” he notes.
However, the dog was left unattended, entangled in the thicket, with open injuries in serious condition and covered in parasites, according to the Civil Police.
The dog was rescued with the support of Dibea (Florianopolis Animal Welfare Council) from Florianopolis still alive. According to the authority, he is undergoing veterinary treatment.
The woman was taken by the civilian police to the CPP (Central de Plantão Policial da Capital). According to the delegate, she spent one night in prison and will remain at the disposal of the judiciary.
Under a law passed in 2020, the practice of abusing, abusing, injuring or mutilating pets is punishable by two to five years in prison in addition to a fine and a ban on detention.
New division
The arrest of the author of the crime for cruelty was the first action of the newly created DPA (Animal Welfare Division) of the civilian police. The work of the police station began on the 14th.
The headquarters of the DPA is located at Rua Felipe Schmidt, nº 755, in the center of Florianópolis. The unit will deal with crimes related to cruelty to pets in 13 municipalities of the region, including the capital, according to the government of Santa Catarina.
A unit affiliated with the Greater Florianopolis Police Department will also serve as a pilot project for the entire Santa Catarina civilian police force. “The idea is to roll it out to the entire state,” the chief executive said.
