Brazilian Begolea Méndez Fernandes was arrested at Lisbon airport in Portugal on Tuesday (28) as he tried to return to Belo Horizonte (MG), his hometown. Information from the portal R7.
The landing staff were suspicious of the man, who had fake Italian documents and an expired Dutch passport. They also discovered that Fernandez was under criminal investigation in Holland, the country where he resided.
The SEF (Foreigners and Borders Service) also found a warrant for the arrest and extradition of Fernandes on suspicion of killing a 21-year-old man in Amsterdam.
The victim of the February 26 murder was named Alan Lopez, and he lived in the capital of the Netherlands for seven years with his mother and sister. The suspect in the crime was a friend of Alan and went to his house for over a year.
In this regard, the authorities decided to search the Brazilian’s suitcase and found clothes with traces of blood, a rope, a telephone and pieces of meat wrapped in polyethylene.
The material was sent for analysis and, according to the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Lisbon confirmed that the analyzed sample was human flesh, but did not belong to Alan Lopez.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper Parool, mutual friends of the defendants said that the suspect had drug problems. The young man who worked as a courier was assisted by Alan.
The group also stated that Fernandes thought Alan wanted to eat him, and before the crime, he received brief messages from Begolea in which the man said he needed to defend himself against Alan, who was a cannibal and that was why he killed him. Then he disappeared, and friends called the police.
The victim’s family stated that Alan was always kind-hearted and tried to help everyone. Mother and stepfather mourned the tragic death of their son.
At the moment, the suspect is in the Santa Maria hospital in Lisbon to check on the injury to his right hand. After the evaluation, he will be sent to the Lisbon Court of Appeal for the first judicial examination.
