The three men who died this Wednesday (15 people) in a fire that engulfed the Florianopolis Penitentiary in Agronomica were poisoned by smoke, according to the chairman of the OAB/SC Prisons Commission (Order of Brazilian Lawyers). , William Shinzato, who is monitoring the situation.
According to Shinzato, the flames started on the mattress. The circumstances of the fire are still being investigated.
One victim from Santa Catarina and two other men from out of state. They are: Danilo Barros (from Salvador, Bahia), Robson da Silva (from Ponte Serrada, in the west of Santa Catarina) and Gerbezon de Souza (from Ceará), according to SAP (Secretary of State for Prisons and Social and Educational Administration).
The men shared cell 22 in the adaptation department, one of the seven sectors of the penitentiary. They were taken out of the cell unconscious, and then Samu (mobile emergency service) confirmed their death.
There are prisoners in the adaptation ward waiting to be placed in other wards—newly incarcerated or awaiting relocation,” Shinzato clarifies. The fire was limited to a cell where three victims were located.
There are 46 inmates living in the entire adaptation wing. All were taken away and taken to sorting, where they assessed the state of health. In principle, no one received a serious concussion.
According to Shinzato, the wing did not suffer from overcrowding, and there were no complaints about the structure of the sector located at the back of the Florianopolis prison. Due to the damage caused by the fire, the sector was banned.
The fire started late in the morning
In the afternoon, relatives of the detainees gathered in front of the block, concerned about the situation. “How can I stay calm? This is my husband, the father of my daughter, and I don’t know if he is alive,” said the wife of one of the prisoners in Florianopolis prison.
She went to the unit after she learned about the fire. The woman, who chose not to be named, received a call from the penitentiary’s social assistance department around 11:30 am. During a conversation with N/A+, she did not know if her husband was among the victims.
Outside, worried about the lack of information, family members gathered in a prayer circle and contacted their private attorneys to try to get more information. Pastoral Carcerária de Florianópolis, an organization of the Catholic Church, provided support.
Another woman whose husband is in prison reported no data+ what a friend said. An acquaintance passed by and warned that they had an ambulance and a strange movement. “I’m very nervous without any news,” she said at the time.
