Strong winds in the late afternoon on Monday (30) caused a tree to fall from a building under construction in the city center onto a school. The children and teachers remained where they were.

Surveillance footage shows a teacher and a child walking by at 5:52 p.m. Twenty seconds later they enter the school and a tree falls from the twentieth floor of the building. The structure must be even larger, as ten floors remain before completion.

The blow was so strong that the iron grate of the school warped. The accident happened on the first day of classes at the school, which has about 120 children aged from one to seven.

“It was our first day at school. We have a week of adaptation, and we had children here. By 6 pm, some had already left, while others were still at school. There was wind and thunder. We automatically run and face damage. Every time we come, there is fear,” commented teacher Minea Chiesa.

Parents feel powerless. Lucelia Paula Zucchi leaves her 6-year-old daughter Helena at school every day. In 2021, when work was just beginning, she also experienced a situation that could have ended in a serious way.

“In 2021, I was parking my car, when I was taking two steps, a large board fell. The building was still low and almost missed my daughter. There were other similar situations. Shortly before the school closed for the holidays, a sign with the name of the building fell on my car. Our fear is constant, slabs are falling, nails are falling, cement is falling. Helena is six years old and has this fear. This complaint is constant, from the very beginning of the work, where there is no security,” the mother says.

Municipal civil defense coordinator Luciano Huning isolated the site and said that work would be suspended until the situation was resolved. “The city government team should accompany the regularization to improve the safety of work and nearby facilities. The school will be without classes for a week until the situation is resolved,” he said.

The mayor’s office reported that the control and inspection commission for ongoing private works was on site on Tuesday last week and noted that the security measures provided for in the work are being taken, including a new screen and trays. .
